The Department of Radiation Oncology of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, ranked top 5th in NIH research funding, is recruiting for a Radiation Oncologist at the Assistant/Associate/Professor level for a position with at least some focus on the education mission. The preferred candidate will have at least 2-3 years of experience in proton therapy and/or demonstration of academic productivity, with an associated interest in departmental educational leadership opportunities, such as becoming the faculty Director of our Medical Residency program. The selected candidate will provide comprehensive patient care primarily at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and at our Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC), as well as have a strong interest in having a career in academic radiation oncology. In addition, this position will have the potential opportunity to rotate with academic based providers at our other practice locations and have an active clinical practice inclusive of patients on clinical trials.
The Department of Radiation Oncology’s clinical program has 21 physicians and 2 physician scientist faculty. The main patient care facility at the UMMC in downtown Baltimore, within the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, is close to the main attractions of the Inner Harbor waterfront and professional sports stadiums. In addition to MPTC, the department has 4 well-integrated community programs. Our current clinical program has 11 linear accelerators, 5 multi-slice large bore CT simulators with 4D capabilities, 1 dual energy CT simulator, 1 MRI Scanner, 2 HDR units, a Gamma Knife, and active programs in IMRT, IGRT, Proton Therapy, Hyperthermia Therapy, Brachytherapy, SRS/SBRT and Radioembolization. The MPTC is equipped with the most advanced technologies, including PBS and CBCT in all rooms, a dedicated MRI sim, and a unique patient throughput system. In addition, there are several campus-wide shared resources including small-animal imaging CT, PET and MR scanners.
The Medical Physics Division, led by Dr. Warren D’Souza, has 24 medical physics faculty, 17 dosimetrists, 9 post-doctoral fellows and graduate students and 4 system administrators and 2 application programmers. All practice sites are connected via a state-of-the-art telemedicine network facilitating interactions between faculty and staff. Medical Physics research endeavors include the development of new treatment planning and delivery techniques, tumor motion management, and inter-fraction image guidance strategies.
Basic research is organized through an extremely well-funded DTRS led by Dr. Zeljko Vujaskovic, which has 15 dedicated research faculty members with grant-funded programs in aspects of cellular responses to DNA damage and molecular biology, as well as preclinical in vivo models of radiation effects on normal tissue. The Department has combined resources that include overall office and lab space of 19,197 sq. ft. inclusive of 1,000 sq. ft. machine shop.
